Sometimes thinking about it
Makes the pain take form,
That I know he’ll never fit
Into what they call ‘the norm’.
But then Buddy smiles,
And it takes the pain away when Buddy smiles.
He can’t talk much
And he can’t read or write,
And sometimes he can’t understand
Wrong from right.
And he communicates
In ways I can’t explain,
Rouses frustrations that
Not even I can frame.
But then Buddy smiles,
And it makes me want to change when Buddy smiles.
I know I’ll never be the same when Buddy smiles.
It’s like the world’s a better place,
Just from the vision of his face,
When Buddy smiles.
